Best Author Tribute Websites
For all the readers out there, did you know that some of your favorite authors have websites? They don’t run the websites themselves (mainly because most of the authors featured here are dead) but the people who love their works created some wonderful websites for you to enjoy.
Alex Haley Tribute Site
The mission of this website is to “spread Alex Haley’s vision for all to know their heritage.” They quote Alex Haley – “In all of us there is a hunger, marrow-deep, to know our heritage – to know who we are and where we have come from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness.” Alex Haley, author of Roots, was committed to making it possible for people to find out about their origins. This website aims to educate about Haley and to carry out his mission.

Douglas Adams
This site, unlike most of the others, actually belonged to the author prior to his death in 2001. Adams was the author of many amazing and influential science fiction works, notably The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The site possess a form that is moderated by alt.fan.douglas-adams folks, so you know that the people responding to you know what they’re talking about.

Oscar Wilde
I was torn about this, since Oscar Wilde is, as it seems, an industry. He is licensed and represented by CMG Worldwide, the same people who license Marilyn Monroe, Babe Ruth, and more. Oscar Wilde died in 1900, but he has never fallen out of fashion. This site contains a good biography section, a list of literary works, a quotes page sorted by category, a photos section, and more. It’s a good site, even if it is really about business. What would Oscar say about that? He’d probably say “no man is rich enough to buy back his past.”

F. Scott Fitzgerald
In this situation, the best site for information on F. Scott Fitzgerald is the F. Scott Fitzgerald Society page. It obviously says something that the man has his own society. Having your own society definitely means that people are paying tribute to you. You can join the society, though it will cost you $25-$30 per year. For free, you can access biographical information, bibliographical information, and you can see what the society is up to. They have an annual conference.

Ernest Hemingway
This website is the property of Caroline Hulse FRSA. She is “an ernest devotee of Ernest Hemingway” and provides biographical information (separated by wife, to a degree), bibliographical information, and several literary essays by Kelley Dupuis. Caroline is a painter, and has painted a wonderful portrait of Hemingway that resides on her website. Don’t steal it!

Dead Caulfields
This site is managed and run, lovingly updated, and expanded, by one Kenneth Slawenski. That name might sound familiar because Slawenski just published a biography of J.D. Salinger called J.D. Salinger: A Life. It is, to date, the most thorough and complete biography of the reclusive author. The website offers information on all of Salinger’s fiction, published and unpublished, collected and uncollected, and is a wonderful resource for the Salinger devotee and novice alike.
