Best Sites for Finding a Job

With unemployment rates on the rise, it’s important to find an online job seeking resource that will actually help you.  Luckily, there are lots of resources out there that can be of some assistance.  Just make sure you have a great resume, and that you’re willing to do the legwork on your own.  These sites can be a great way to learn about available jobs and opportunities, but it really comes down to you to find the career path that is right for you.  Here are some of the best job websites.  Where possible, I’ve taken the liberty doing a search on each site to let you know how easy/hard it is to navigate.

JOB Central

LOTS of jobs listed nationally

JobCentral
JobCentral is affiliated with Direct Employers Association, which is a collection of corporations and state agencies that cooperate to “increase labor market efficiency and reduce recruiting costs.”  So, it’s a place online where big companies and governmental agencies network to post jobs, review resumes, and participate in discussions and webinars.  To try the site out, I searched jobs by occupation – office and administrative support.  The site found more than 500 jobs in that category.  I filtered the search results by location – Orlando, FL.  That narrowed the results to 238 search results.  I further filtered the results by company – Marriott, and that action narrowed the results to 19.  I clicked on “Supervisor – Front Desk” and it took me right to the company’s external employment website, so I had to then navigate that system.  Not too bad.  LOTS of jobs listed nationally.

Vault Career Intelligence

job hunting site with career advice

Vault
The Vault is a website devoted to job seekers, rather than employers seeking employees.  They provide a job seeking function, but offer plenty of resources on job hunting, career advice, and a helpful employer profile/ranking system.  I did a search by company name – Marriott.  It pulled search results from all over the internet (namely Ebay Classifieds) for jobs with Marriott.  So, the search engine isn’t managed by Vault, which has pitfalls and advantages.

Job Fox

Fastest Growing Job Site in America

Jobfox is a job site that started in 2004.  They developed a Mutual Suitability System™ that matches job seekers with employers.  It’s sort of like eHarmony, but for jobs.  You get a Suitability Profile that establishes your wants, needs, skills, and working style and uses that to match you to job opportunities.  To start out, you have to answer whether you’re looking for full-time employment or part-time, and it asks your availability.  I chose full-time position and that “I’m currently employed and pretty happy:  the benefits of change would have to be really strong.”  Then it asks you where you’d like to work – your zip code, whether or not you’re willing to locate, and if so, to which markets you’d be willing to move.  I chose that I was willing to relocate, provided expenses would be paid, and chose “any” for available markets.  Then it asked if I’d like my profile to be invisible to my current employer, and I chose “no.”  The website then prompts you to create an account, which if I spent the time to do,  I wouldn’t be able to finish this post.  Plus, I’m not looking for a job.  I have a sweet one writing this website for you guys.  From the reviews I’ve read, the search results are most helpful to those who are willing to relocate.

Jobing – Local Job Finding Site

Your First Choice for Local Jobs

JobingJobing focuses mainly on displaying jobs in  18 U.S. cities.  Aaron Matos, founder, started the website in 2000 and was originally focused in Phoenix, AZ.  The site has branched out, and now covers Tuscon, parts of Colorado, California, and more.  I entered the zip code 23294 and it brought up a page that showed all the towns with available jobs.  The offerings are Boise, ID; Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; St. Louis, MO; and many, many more.  I clicked on Orlando, FL, just for continuity’s sake, and when I got to the Orlando search page I searched for Administrative/Clerical jobs in Metro Orlando.  The search yielded 7 results.  I clicked on the result for Macy’s Mall at Millenia, Orlando, FL and there was a full description of the position.  Not too shabby.

Career Builder

Find a Job Site – Search Jobs

CareerBuilder
CareerBuilder is one of the big sites.  It’s gets over 23 million visitors per month, and it’s core values are:  candor, disciplined freedom, passion, agility, and easy to do business with.  Again, I searched “Admin-clerical” and the location Orlando, FL.  It found 208 results, and I narrowed the search by Orlando again.  Not sure why that was necessary, but it narrowed the results to 135.  Many of the results were staffing company offerings, which is always sort of frustrating, but there were some company listings, and the job descriptions were good.

Monster Jobs

Monster of job search sites

Monster
Monster is the…well…monster of job search sites.  It offers job searches by region, job title, keywords, and also provides job search advice, resume advice, and has a handy resume builder.  I searched for “Administrative Assistant” in Orlando, FL, and the search returned 39 results.  Pretty easy, and you can save your search results so you can go back to them.

Simply Hired

job search site

Simply Hired
Simply Hired is a job search site out of Silicon Valley, and it is constantly improving its features and offerings.  I searched for “Admin” in Orlando, FL and it found search engine results from all over the web, which means the results themselves require some legwork.  It found 43 Administrative Assistant results, 40 Taco Bell Assistant Manager positions, and 10 Teller positions.  Got to go, it’s lunch time and Taco Bell sounds goooood.
