Best Sporting News Sites

As football season arrives, a lot of people are discussing sports.  While you can get sports news on almost every channel and webpage out there, there is something to be said for a website that devotes its content to sports all the time.  Where the smallest lineup change, trade, or injury is front page news.  Where they actually KNOW sports.  This, for instance, is not one of those sites, but we’re going to tell you which ones are.

Of course, a more succinct list would give you several resources for each sport.  But we have to start somewhere, don’t we?  Here are the best general websites for sports news.

ESPN

ESPN
ESPN stands for Entertainment Sports Programming Network.  The TV channel has been around since 1979 and the website has been around, in one form or another, since 1995.  It is the most popular sports website on the internet.  It has a different section for each major sport (including NASCAR) and each of those pages has subpages that give information on scores, schedules, players, and more.  It is, in essence, your one-stop webpage for sports news.

Sporting News

Sporting News

This site is affiliated with the magazine Sporting News, which has been around since 1886!  It covers all sorts of sports, but has a particular flare for baseball – causing it to earn the name “The Bible of Baseball.”  The magazine isn’t a weekly anymore – it’s bi-weekly, but the website is updated every day.

Sports Illustrated

SI
Time Warner’s answer to sports, Sports Illustrated the magazine was launched in 1954, and the website is affiliated with CNN.  There is plenty of sports information available, and Sports Illustrated has something the other sports sites don’t – the Swimsuit section.  The magazine’s swimsuit issue has been around since 1964, and I guess the people who designed the website realized that it just HAD to have a swimsuit section.

NBC Sports

NBC Sports

From the network that gave us commentary by Bob Costas, Bryant Gumbel, and Bob Uecker (among many, many others) we have NBC Sports, a robust website with tons of sports information.  And, since NBC is the network that broadcasts the Olympics, PGA, and the Preakness and Kentucky Derby, you’ll probably get some inside info on those exciting events.

CBS Sports

CBS Sports
Launched in 1994 as SportsLine USA, this website is considered one of the very best for sports, falling just behind ESPN.com.  It has some pretty impressive online columnists, including Jamey Eisenberg (fantasy sports expert), Lesley Visser, and Clark Kellogg.  One thing that CBS has done right is that you can log in and maintain a member profile, which allows you to interact with other readers.  It’s a community!

Fox Sports

Fox Sports
Saw what you will about the Fox Network, the sports website is a pretty great site and is among the top rated and used.  FOXSports covers a little bit of everything, including mixed martial arts, which is pretty cool.  FOXSports is affiliated with MSN, and has plenty of exclusive writers, including actor and comedian Jay Mohr.

>>FOXSports – foxsports.com

Yahoo!Sports

Yahoo
Yahoo! Sports is one of the premier online resources for sports news, including international sports news.  It’s been around since 1997 and has been improving ever since.  They have a fantasy sports section that is very robust and interactive, and the site is host to many sports blogs.
