Best Wine Review Web Sites By Wine Reviewers

I know we write about the best websites for a particular subject all the time, but every now and then I’m particularly impressed when a group of people go to the trouble to make dedicated websites to a particular topic.  Usually it’s something that is socially relevant, ecologically responsible, or a “save the world” kind of thing, but sometimes I admire the sheer dedication it takes to create a website on something like wine, and to be willing to drink all that wine and tell us about it.  Hats off to you, Wine Reviewer Guy.  What would we ever do without you?

I know that comes of as snarky, but I really don’t mean it that way.  I know one person, for instance, who only likes one particular type of wine from one particular region of Italy.  This person could never have a wine review site, unless it was a site reviewing that particular niche of wine, for which (let’s face it) there isn’t a whole lot of demand.   These guys might have a particular wine they like, but they will bite the bullet and review them all for you – or at least they’ll let someone review them for you.  Here is a list of the best wine reviews sites (that are predominantly by dudes).

Cork’d

Corkd
Chairman Gary Vaynerchuk hates it when people get snobby about wine.  That’s why he created Wine Library, a wine store in Springfield, New Jersey, and also a powerful online wine retailer.  Cork’d is his attempt to bring the wine to the masses, and we thank him from the bottom of our happy (slightly tipsy) tummies.  But, behind every successful wine dude is an awesome woman, and in Gary’s case he has his wife, Lizzie, and his CEO, Lindsay.  Lindsay Ronga has an impressive resume, with a background in financial services and a fast-learned wealth of wine knowledge.  The site’s Senior Editor is Job Troutman, who grew up working in his family’s restaurant and learned to love wine early on.  He loves to write about wine almost as much as he loves drinking it.

1 Wine Dude

Joe Roberts is serious about wine, but he doesn’t expect you to be.  He wants you to appreciate wine, but he doesn’t want you to have to pass a test about it.  He has traveled the world AND done the research so that you don’t have to, and as a result he has created an award-winning blog, and has earned the distinction of Certified Wine Specialist.  Some of the awards the blog has won include Best Overall Wine Blog by 2010 Wine Blog Awards, Top 100 Food/Living Blog by Technorati, and so many, many more.  Joe writes wine reviews, but also talks about the wine industry and basically educates his reader on the world of wine.  He also plays the digeridoo, which is SO COOL.

The 89 Project

The 89 Project

OK, so this isn’t TECHNICALLY a wine dude blog.  It is a blog where many different wine bloggers can chime in on 89-rated wines.  What’s that?  It’s a wine that has been rated as an 89 by Wine Spectator.  What difference does that make?  Well, apparently there is a huge price distinction between a 90 rated wine and an 89 rated wine.  Some bloggers and wine people don’t like this rating system, so what the 89 project is all about is taking those 89 rated wines and writing them up – because they might be just as good as a wine that was given a 90 rating, and they might be just as good if not better.  Or, they might suck.  These bloggers will tell you if they do.

Dr. Vino’s Wine Blog

Dr Vino
Dr. Tyler Colman is Dr. Vino, and he’s really a doctor.  His study of wine led him to his dissertation topic – a study of the politics of the wine industry in the U.S. and France.  He has written two books, and he’s been published in Food & Wine, Wine & Spirits, the New York Times, Forbes.com, and more.  Plus, he teaches classes on wine at the University of Chicago and NYU, tastes about 1000 wines per year, and writes this blog.  He’s busy!  He also knows a lot about wine, so expect to learn a lot when you read his site.

New York Cork Report

New York Cork Report
The wine reviews on this site are the result of the effort of four dudes, but there are a lot of other people work on this website.  There is a beer editor, a cheese editor, and some regional critics too.  The posts run the gamut between New York wine news and event notifications, restaurant reviews, wine reviews, and winery write-ups and reviews.  If you’re planning a trip to New York and are a fan of wine, this is the site for you.  Executive Editor Lenn Thompson started the site in 2004 after moving to Long Island and becoming totally enamored with New York’s unique wine industry.

Ken’s Wine Guide

Kens Wine Guide
Once upon a time, in 1998, Ken went to the Boston Wine Expo.  He wrote some notes.  When his in-laws asked, “What should we get Ken for Christmas?” they remembered that Ken liked wine.  But what kind of wine would they buy for Ken?  Lucky for them, Ken had his notes from the Expo.  Hurrah!  We know what wines Ken likes!  Thus the concept of Ken’s Wine Guide was born.  What was once a Word document is now a website, with all sorts of wine reviews and information on wines.  It’s chock-full of goodness.  Thanks, Ken!

The Good Wine Guru

The Good Wine Guru

George Perry is a self-taught wine enthusiast, and he didn’t feel like he should keep his enthusiasm or his knowledge to himself any longer.  So he launched The Good Wine Guru in January of 2009 and keeps his content current with the help of his lovely wife, April.  Together they taste wines, and George is regularly invited to tastings by wineries, restaurants, and independent retailers.  George’s reviews are succinct and honest – he doesn’t pander to winemakers nor does he skimp on the description.  This is a good, solid wine review site.

The Other 46

The Other 46
Brian Kirby discovered his love for wine in the heart of Virginia, and after some thought, he realized that states like Virginia sort of get left out of the wine world.  He started The Other 46 about the states that AREN’T California, Oregon, New York, or Washington, so he talks about events, wine, and wine news in “the Other 46.”  Virginia appreciates that, Brian.
