PBS Civil War

Ken Burns Acclaimed Documentary

The 11-hour Civil War presented on PBS was one of the most successful mini-series ever on public television. Burns uses narrators reading actual letters and documents from the era. The film is available on 5 DVDs and it tells the story of the war from events that led up to the conflict to the aftermath and rebuilding.

Virginia Civil War Sesquicentennial

Where most of the war was fought

Virginia was both the largest slave-owning state up until the end of the war and the state where the largest number of Civil War battles were fought. The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission was created by the Virginia General Assembly to prepare for the commemoration of the American Civil War.

The Underground Railroad

National Geographic’s Interactive Site

No discussion of the American Civil War is complete without a mention of the vile institution of slavery. One of the greatest efforst to help slaves reach their freedom was the Underground Railroad. Estimates believe that over 100,000 escaped through this network of secret routes and safe houses. Former slave Harriet Tubman made some 13 trips to the south. Honoring those who fought to preserve the Union

Like their counterparts to the south the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War seek to preserve the memory and legacyof the Grand Army of the Republic. Their national headquarters is in the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The largest resource on the Internet for Sons of Union Veterans the site has over six thousand pages of information.
