Transworld is a print and online magazine devoted to all things concerned with skateboarding. You’ll have to subscribe to get the full bounty of the site, but there’s more than enough to check out before you decide to commit. Any good skateboarding site will have videos and photos, and Transworld has these in spades. Both are categorized by event, and you could spend hours taking them all in. There are also reviews and links to places you can by clothing, gear, and accessories, and a whole section of how-to guides. These are mostly in video form, and are prefaced by an explanation of the trick or transition in question by the featured skater. Subscribe to the RSS feed to get the latest news as it is published.

Thrasher

Thrasher magazine is the household name for skaters and the folks who know them. Once again, you will have to subscribe to see it all, but what’s on the surface will keep you busy for quite some time. The store links to deals you won’t find elsewhere; there are thirteen categories for videos, including crashes and contest winners. You can find out more about the music used on the site under the “Features” bar, where there are also tons of contests and giveaways you can enter. You can check the interactive skate park map to find a spot to shred on nearly every continent (excepting Antarctica). There is also a forum page you may join to discuss matters of all sorts. After you have perused the site, friended, followed, liked, and subscribed to Thrasher’s YouTube channel and RSS feed, you might as well subscribe to the magazine to make it official.

Skateboarder Magazine’s page resembles many of the better news sites, where you can get a rundown of the latest articles, photos, videos, and features. A sidebar displays the day’s Twitter feed, Facebook activity, comments, and industry news. There are scads of contests you can enter to win decks, wheels, boards, and more. If you like what you see, you can subscribe to the print and/or online magazine to get full access to the site. Without a subscription, you can still view videos, photos, and articles.

Exploratorium is the museum of science, art and human perception. This is their treatment of skateboarding. Not surprisingly, the all-encompassing how-to site, About.com has a pretty thorough skateboarding site. There are links to videos that show you step-by-step execution of tricks ranging from basic to death defying. The site also features articles on building skateboards, longboards, history, lifestyle, and events. There is also a link to other boardsports for those who love the ride on any terrain. About.com is a great place to start for beginners, and a nice resource for finding the latest news.

Life Goes Skateboarding

Life magazine, famous for it’s beautiful and iconic photography has your favorite activity covered in the most spectacular way. If you’re wild about skateboarding, take a moment to read through Life’s treatment of the sport, the lifestyle, and the craze, as it was in the 1960s. Of course. If you are a fan of North American hockey, you have to start at the official site of the NHL. I really like all of the HD videos and nearly-instant news updates on current games. The sections on stats and standings also are comprehensive and easy to read. The only thing I don’t like is that they force you to watch a 45 second commercial before you watch any video. I just turn down the sound and wait for it to be over before watching .

Junior Teams Site

This is a good site to keep track of if you want to learn more about the up and coming American and Canadian players. This also is the site to watch for the American national team. They have great sections on the Olympic team, and also about the World Cup and World Championship. There also are lots of resources here on how to become a certified coach and goalie.

The Hockey News

College, National and International Hockey

This is a great site covering all of the news of the hockey world, all over the planet. Much of their coverage is of the NHL but they also cover the KHL and also the national teams for many countries. They also have a great section on the up and coming prospects that may make it to the NHL. The hockey insiders columns are also nice for interesting insights, such as the myth of mental toughness, and how concussions really affect the body.

This is an incredibly rich database of hockey player and team information. There are dozens of hockey leagues in this database going back nearly a century. You can find the most obscure hockey player going back decades in this database. Surfer Magazine

News, Boards, Features and More

This site features tons of great pictures of surfing in all sorts of beautiful places, not to mention loads of videos too. It also has a great forecast section if you are planning to hit the waves soon, and there is a good section of blogs. I also like the forum where I can chat with other surfers. The feature section is very interesting, as well, such as the story about how parents can be too demanding and even abusive to their surfing children.

Know Before You Go

This appears to be a great website for the serious surfer. You get all sorts of extended forecasts for surfing all over the world, as well as plenty of live cameras, news, cool features, photos and videos. If you pay for their premium service, you will get HD video, more forecasts and even an app for your Smartphone. They have live cameras on beaches all over the world, so this is a great resource.

This site has a great surfing shop where you can buy shorts, hats, bathing suits, body suits, boots, everything you need for your next day in the water. I also liked the Gear Guide for 2011 and 2012. This site is for professional surfers and professional surfing fans. It has rankings for surfers in many categories, and it also has a long list of international surfing events each year. It also has a dedicated section for each part of the globe, so you can read all about surfing in your part of the world. They also have some great videos of world competitions.

Equestrian Mag is an online magazine for horse enthusiasts, and each month covers a broad range of topics with in-depth articles. Whether you are looking for ratings on different equipment and accessories, you want to change your horse’s diet, or you want to read the latest news in equestrian sports, you will find it here. There are also book and film reviews, and plenty of gift suggestions for the horse lover in your life. Want to plan a family ranch vacation or ship the kids off to riding camp for a few weeks? You’ll find links and reviews on places to do that, too. This site is Spartan, and therefore easy-to-navigate. One odd feature here is the “Auctions” button, where you might assume you can browse classifieds by region. No, it’s a list of equestrian paraphernalia from eBay: typically prints and clothing. Horse Journals is a pretty site that covers all the bases. The information here is diverse, albeit heavy on the merchandising. What that means is, you will find well-written articles on topics like the safety of the newest round of vaccinations, critical reception of the latest horsey films, and biographical articles on jockeys. You will also find all manner of new and improved feeding systems, vitamins, saddles, leads, bridles, and show accessories. There are also scads of books and DVDs. If you’re looking for a pony club in your area, or you are a rider looking for sponsors, this will be a terrific resource for you.

Horsetalk, a New Zealand-based site that is organized like some of the better online news sources, certainly seems to be geared to the intellectual horse lover. The breadth of scope here is impressive: you can read about developments in stem-cell treatments for horses; check the status of racing horses (and their riders and handlers) at nearly every level; broaden your understanding of human/horse relations with a cache of historical articles; or read light, human-interest stories (see: “Officer Nabs Zebra on Kansas Highway”). I find this site very interesting because it goes into depth about how a lava lamp works. It also informs you about the science of creating a really good lava lamp. You need to choose the correct materials so that the blobs inside will move around a lot and create interesting shapes. Some of them are as tall as a person, and there is one in Washington that is 60 feet tall!

The layout of Fodor’s guide to Puerto Rico is as good as it gets. There are headings for every sort of interest, including honeymoon activities, traveling with kids, and LGBT friendly spots. Classic Motorsports is the quintessential magazine for shade-tree mechanics and car enthusiasts alike. This is their website. Even if you aren’t a subscriber, you can access articles, participate in reader forums, and find auto clubs and shows in your area. Of course, if you have a classic car in your garage, you out to have a stack of these magazines on your coffee table. The vehicles profiled both in print and online are accompanied by short articles that address the various problems the staff of mechanics has run across during the restoration process and how they solved them. You can search the site for the exact make and model of your car and you’ll generally be rewarded with a whole slew of articles that detail everything from cosmetic to down and dirty reconstruction.

The Jalopy Journal

The Jalopy Journal is the go to spot for traditional hotrods and custom cars. Articles range from purist restorations to Franken-cars built from bits and pieces. Each page ends on a bit of cheeky Americana, be it a vintage pinup gal, or a thoroughly impressed Stepford Wife. You can get up close and personal with the Folks of Interest, or read the history of your favorite classic. Under Motion Pictures, you might expect to see a list of films that feature beautiful cars and maybe some clips. Instead, you will find videos of guys and their classics: mostly at auto shows, but some vintage clips are featured, too. You won’t always find the most in-depth details about fixes here, but there are lovely images and articles that will leave you inspired enough to start working on your own heap.

My Star Collector Car

My Star Collector Car is the hall of fame for regular folks who pull off a great restoration, so take plenty of photos and videos of your process and you too could be featured on the site. The authors of the site are a couple of regular guys who truly love what were once just regular cars, and since they could never afford to pay top dollar for someone else to do a complete overhaul on a classic, they learned to do it themselves. Each profile celebrates the car as much as the owner, for each has personality. While there’s no shortage of hot Mustangs an Cadillacs here, you will also find profiles of a family who have converted a vintage Western Flyer Bus into a Motor Home; a 1974 Datsun truck held together by zip ties; and a regular feature called “Stars in Traffic” where photos of passing beauties are posted. The latter will surely be entertaining to anyone who has pulled over in haste to snap a cell-phone shot of a terrific vintage automobile.

 Bad Shoe Productions

Bad Shoe Productions is a rather spare looking page, however, the site’s author and resident mechanic has a ton of advice to give on the various Frequently Asked Questions pages and the accompanying YouTube page. The videos are just great, and some of the projects he tackles include engine swapping and rebuilding a transmission. Dig in, though, there is very little time lapse here, so some tutorials are hours long. You can also buy the tutorials as DVDs or downloads from the site.

 Mini Magazine

Mini Mag is big fun in a little package, fun for the vintage car lover who appreciates diminutive models, like Austin Healy and Cooper. This site doesn’t simply recognize the possibility of doing restoration and repairs yourself, it recommends it. You can check out a buying guide, or join in on forum discussions with other Mini maniacs. You can even buy parts and manuals here, but be warned: this is a British site, so having the parts shipped stateside might set you back a bit. Autism Speaks

Autism Speaks may be the best-known source of autism awareness, thanks in part to the omnipresent puzzle piece logo. This organization is the largest of its type, and contributes mightily to research regarding the causes of autism, as well as the possibility of prevention and treatment. Autism Speaks is also fiercely devoted to raising awareness of autism’s many spectrum disorders, and is an advocate of autistic individuals and their families. This is a great site, especially for families of newly diagnosed children. It is easy to navigate and you will quickly find links to fund raising events, family services, and the latest developments in medical research. What may be most helpful to newly diagnosed families are the tool kits, specifically the 100 Day Kit, which is filled with helpful information to get families through the first one hundred days following a child’s diagnosis with autism, Asperger’s, or high functioning autism. This kit will assist families in understanding how to communicate with the child, and seeing the disorder as only one part of the child, rather than his or her defining characteristic.

The Autism Society

The Autism Society is a grassroots organization founded in the 1960s by two doctors and several parents of children with autism. At a time when there was little known about the disorder, the Autism Society worked to raise awareness and a greater understanding of the needs of individuals with autism and related conditions. The site is in English and Spanish, and there are several narratives written by adults and children with autism who have overcome many of the obstacles often associated with autism. There is information about autism and related conditions, as well as advice for families and individuals regarding services, treatment, and understanding autism as the child moves into adolescence and adulthood. You can subscribe to the society’s blog and its quarterly publication, and learn about resources in your area. If you are near San Diego, or you like to travel, you might consider attending the National Conference and Exposition: the 43^rd thus far.

The Autism Research Institute

The Autism Research Institute works tirelessly to undo the common misconceptions about autism. In annual conferences, writers, parents, doctors, and individuals with autism and the spectrum disorders present papers that do just that. One topic up for discussion this year is the discovery that autism is far more than a neurological condition. There is a wealth of information on the ARI page, ranging from support for new parents, like finding a doctor and dietary advice, to preparing adults with ASD for entering the workforce. The site offers translations to ten different languages. The links section will take you to podcasts, videos, literature, and advocacy groups, while the information within the page will give you an incredibly thorough rundown of common medications and side effects, how to address some of the stumbling blocks to communication, and the latest medical developments. There is an abundance of support for siblings of autistic individuals, who may often be overlooked as the main focus of attention goes to the person with ASD, and then to the parents.

Autism Today is a page intended to simplify the deluge of information one will encounter when beginning research on autism. With over 2,500 pages of content, the site’s archives are surprisingly easy to navigate. Autism Today is more than just articles, though: there are streaming Tele-Classes, a gallery of artwork by individuals with ASD, and tons of resources. The National Autism Association gives a great deal of emphasis to both the treatment of autism, and to addressing the way in which parents, doctors, and educators approach the disorder. Much of the literature on this site points to evidence of the successful treatment of autism through nutritional supplements and diet, as well as various therapies. Anyone interested in exploring these treatments can search under the “About Autism” heading to read more about music therapy, Canine Companions, and other unconventional approaches. Unfortunately the site doesn’t link to a directory for these services, so consider it a great starting point for treatment and continue your research elsewhere. The home page does address some of the major concerns like wandering off, bullying, and depression.

 Talk About Curing Autism

Talk About Curing Autism, or TACA, began in 2000 when Lisa Ackerman and her family decided to start a family support group after her son’s diagnosis left her reeling. As little as ten years ago, doctors were still recommending institutionalization for autistic individuals; Ackerman refused to accept that as an option. Because of this, her son is now in a regular 7^th grade class with an aide, and he is responsive and has lots of friends. The Ackerman family is on a mission to help other families create success stories of their own, and this site is filled with family resources, advice for newly diagnosed families, autism facts and statistics, and more. There are TACA chapters throughout the country and you can find one near you on the interactive map. If you are curious to know what goes on at these meetings, you can check out videos of previous ones. TACA takes full advantage of social media, and is available in just about any language you like.
