Vet Info

Vet Info is cool because it is advice on pets from actual veterinarians.  There is even an “Ask a Vet” section where you can type in your question and a vet who is online will answer.  I tried it out to see if it was free, and it isn’t.  If you’re satisfied with the answer, you have to pay $38.  A small price to pay for piece of mind if your dog has ingested something funky, or has been injured.

This site has been around for 12 years and has covered the gamut, from behavior to protection, leash laws to dog therapy, this site has a resource for almost everything.  It’s designed to be a site for kids, but it can benefit a dog owner of any age.  Jan Wall created an interactive place for kids, but it is so much more than that.

Summer Quenchers – our favorites

Lemonade A summer classic that’s been around for generations. With lemons, sugar and water – it’s a sweet treat that has quenched thirst for many during hot summers. Or try a lemonade mix for a sweet lemonade on-the-go.

Pink lemonade This has become more popular over the years. Lemons, sugar and water and a little cranberry juice to make it pink! Especially with little girls (and big girls) who like all things pink, pink lemonade is a popular sweet thirst quencher.

Iced coffee This is yet another very popular summer drink with adults and teens. Some like whipped cream or flavors added to their iced coffee. Others just drink it with a little milk. To make iced coffee, it’s quite easy: take cold pre-brewed coffee and add milk and sugar if desired. Add ice and drink!

Milkshake Add milk, several scoops of ice cream, fruit and other toppings if desired (depending on flavor). Add to a blender and place on “crush.” Blend until smooth and serve frosty cold.

Iced tea…or sweet tea! A classic summer thirst quencher, especially in the Southern states – that has grown in popularity. Even McDonald’s now offers Sweet Tea as part of its regular menu year-round – reminding us just how much everyone loves iced tea and sweet tea. Make your own by brewing six tea bags. Add sugar if you desire sweet tea. Add lemon if you prefer. Add water and ice, as desired to your preferred flavor.

Mojito The classic mojito isn’t too sweet. With white rum, sugar, mint, lime and club soda. It’s a great solution for putting your fresh mint to work in great summer drinks. A cold, tall mojito for many is like summer in a glass.

Bellini There’s something just a bit exotic about the bellini. The classic bellini has a peach that is pureed and 4-6 ounces of champagne. At a bar, you’ll find the bellini with peach nectar, peach schnapps and a little lemon juice. The only thing more fun than making the perfect bellini? Drinking one!

The “Original” Cuba Libra is a summer drink you won’t want to miss. From Esquire Magazine, this drink dates straight back to the Spanish-American War and has many fans. Try this with different types of rum to get various tastes on the Cuba Libra.

Sea Breeze Now the mere name of this drink reminds us easily of a summer’s cool breeze. Why I’m getting cooler and more comfortable just thinking about this Sea Breeze drink. With cranberry juice, grapefruit juice, vodka and a lime wedge – it’s a citrusy treat you won’t want to miss this summer. Close your eyes and feel the breeze!

Daiquiri This is a true classic summer drink. No, it’s not created with mixes or powders. Use lime juice, one-half part sugar and three-parts Bacardi and then shake with ice. This is a classic drink that really goes back to the basics.

Bad Spider Bites

It might be a site about termites, but it has this handy spider identification chart, and you can apply online for a free printout to hang in your…house?  Garden shed?  Car?  The clickable page allows you to move down the page to the spider category you choose, and it tells you about what the spider looks like, whether it is venomous or not, and where you’re likely to run into it.  Handy.

Insects.Tamu

If you don’t mind reading, this is a fabulous resource with tons of information about spiders.  John A. Jackman from Texas A & M wrote this piece, which is a very readable overview of spiders – which ones are harmful, and which ones aren’t.  He gives you the category of spider, a description and overview of the life cycle, and the bite symptoms if the spider is venomous.  Thanks, John!

This site is a wealth of information on every type of creepy crawly out there.  Ants to Worms, and everything in between.  It’s a blog, so you have to search for information, but the blogmaster has taken pains to record as many different pictures and bug facts as humanly possible.  It’s a valiant effort, and a site worth visiting.

I first discovered BeckEye a few years ago during American Idol season.  She’s hilarious, and she has really, really interesting taste in music.  Really interesting.  She posts a forgotten “classic” video every week, and she makes some bitingly funny remarks about some of the messier celebrities.  Love her.

Best Week Ever

This is a VH1 website that is the online component to the show called Best Week Ever.  I don’t watch the show.  I do, however, frequent this website.  It’s so well done, and so very funny.  I don’t even follow reality dating shows, but with a title like, “Vienna Girardi Emerges From Ugly Bachelor Breakup As The Silkwood Of Reality Dating Shows” I’m going to read that post anyway.  For sure.

Hot Momma Gossip

Hot Momma Gossip is a very straightforward site that is dedicated to celebrity gossip and news.  It’s just a good, solid site, and they try not to be too mean about people.  So, if you’re looking for deep snark, don’t go here, but if you’re looking for a place that you won’t get your sensibilities offended, stick around.  The site has some legs – they’ve been around since 2005 – so they know what they’re talking about and have most of their bugs worked out.  Most.

Go Fug Yourself

I know what you’re thinking.  “Fug” is, like, a dirty word, right?  Well, not according to Heather and Jessica, who tell us in the FAQs that “fug” is a contraction of “fantastically ugly.”  We’ll go with that.  Basically, this site is all about celebrity fashion – mainly the faux pas – and Heather and Jessica are HILARIOUS.  It’s possible, upon the first visit, to spend six or seven hours on this site, using the handy right sidebar to click on your favorite or least favorite celebrity’s names and seeing the posts Heather and Jessica have made about them.  Trust me.  It’s possible.

Celebitchy

This is a site that has many talented contributing writers.  Unfortunately, I am not one of them.  That’s OK, because the folks they have are fantasticish.  The posts are funny but still full of information, and the writers put thought into their posts.  That’s not to say that the other sites mentioned DON’T put thought into their posts – they do, but this site is self-described as “smart” so I thought I’d mention that they are.  So they’d like that, and ask me to do a guest post.  Just kidding.  Or am I?

So, Kathy Griffin isn’t the author of this site.  In fact, the name of the site used to be The D List, but then Kathy Griffin had that show, and Michael K didn’t want problems with the D List Diva, so there you go.  Some of the language is NSFW, or if you have those delicate sensibilities we talked about earlier.  If you don’t mind some cussing, check out this site because this guy is also HILARIOUS.  Even if he is a potty pen.  Potty typer.  Potty blogger.  Potty mouth.  Whatever.  He should call me and we could talk smack about The Jonas Brothers together.

Gawker

This site is big league – they have a different big sponsor every day (at least every day I looked at the site, which was three days in a row – and the coolest sponsor was Cheetos – it was the first day I looked at the site and I thought “Sweet!  This site is exclusively sponsored by Cheetos!  I bet all the writers get free Cheetos!” but then I looked at the site today and it was some kind of tequila and I thought, “Sweet!  Those writers must get free Cheetos AND free tequila!” and then I thought about writing to them to find out but I chickened out because if they DO get free Cheetos and tequila they sure aren’t going to tell me about it.  Anyway.  Their site is first rate, despite all the flashy advertising.  The writing is sharp and funny.  You would like it.

I would be remiss if I left out the self-proclaimed Queen of All Media.  Perez and his team are fabulous and funny, and I have nothing bad at all to say about them.  Except one thing.  I hate the little cheapo paint program thing they use to “alter” the photographs.  I realize it’s designed to visually show you what they think of the celebrity, but it looks dumb to me and I don’t like it.  Perez is better than that.  Gee.  That wasn’t funny at all.  That was, like, brutally honest and straightforward.  I’m sorry, Internet.  I’m sorry, Paris.  Back to the nonsense!

Ken Burns Acclaimed Documentary

The 11-hour Civil War presented on PBS was one of the most successful mini-series ever on public television. Burns uses narrators reading actual letters and documents from the era.
