Some people are “dog people.” That doesn’t mean they have an overly keen sense of smell, or are very hairy. They just prefer dogs to, say, cats, or birds, or guinea pigs as pets. Others are “cat people.” Again, that means that they prefer cats as pets, not that they take a tinkle in a a box full of sand, or claw up the furniture. Some people out there are neither “dog people” nor are they “cat people.” They like different types of pets. They like pets that are scaly, or furry in a spidery way, or perhaps even pets that could technically kill them. They like exotic pets.
Whether you want to keep an alligator in your bathtub (not recommended in Arkansas), or a monkey in your guest room, there is a website out there for you. Several of them, in fact. Keep in mind, however, that different US States have different laws regarding different types of animals, so just because you fall in love with a rhinoceros on one of these websites, make sure you know the law before you start building that rhinoceros house in the backyard.
Cheryl Morgan is a businesswoman. She says that if an animal is out there to be had, and if you can find the permission to have it, she can find it for you. She owns a huge ranch in Texas that is simply crawling with exotic animals. She buys and sells these animals for profit. While some people have a problem with that, she insists that she has the training and the credentials to operate a business like this, and the people who work with her revere her. One good thing is that if someone is in over their head with an exotic pet, she will take it off their hands. Her list of available animals isn’t on her website, so you’ll have to call her up to see if she’s got the kind of animal you want, but her tabs on her website will show you the types of animals she can get.

Located in Chester, VA, which is very close to Richmond, VA, Exotic Pets deals mainly in reptiles. Snakes, Lizards, and Frogs. Actually, frogs are amphibians, so they deal mainly in reptiles and amphibians. But not turtles. Though they could probably find you a turtle if you wanted them to. They have the ability to ship a pet to you (reptiles are pretty hardy, and FedEx ships stuff fast) or you can come to their shop. You can even have a birthday party in their store and hold the snakes and everything. For some people, that would be really cool. For others, it would be the birthday party you threw for them if you hated them a lot.

Read Julie’s website, and you will learn that she runs a 22-acre breeding farm in Florida. Unlike an earlier site, Julie’s has a list of available pets, so if you’re just shopping around you can “browse” the exotic pets for sale. For instance, you can get a Kinkajou for only $2400. What the heck is a Kinkajou? Well, it’s a rain forest animal that’s related to the raccoon, and it’s mostly nocturnal. So that’s cool. In the market for a Nigerian Dwarf Goat? You’re in luck!

Sometimes you just want a really exotic cat. These cats, called the Mokave Jag Cat, are born on an 80-acre wildlife preserve in California and then transported to Jacksonville, FL. These cats are super cute, and have really cool markings. They are hybrids of bigger cats (like jaguars and lynx) and smaller domestic cats, resulting in a smart, strong, big cat that has the head of a lynx, the body of a jaguar, and are larger than the average house cat. They’re bred for temperament, so they’re really friendly and smart. I totally want one. Of course, they’re between $3000 and $4000, so I’ll keep dreaming.

This is a classified site, so instead of buying an exotic pet from a breeder you’re buying one from someone who already bought one from a breeder. or something. The bad: you have to register for the site to place an ad, and pay for it. The good – you can find exotic pets and most people will “ship” the pet to you. Watch out for fraud, though, because some people are unethical.

Located in Houston, S & S Exotic Animals, Inc offers Reptiles, Amphibians, Birds, and Insects. Want a Flat Rock Scorpion? A Siberian Dwarf Hamster? A Bird Poop Frog? Now you have the source. Not only does S & S offer these pets and more, but also pet manuals, videos, and accessories. The mammals ship via airline, so for a cool $225 through Delta and $1000 you can get a Mosaic Sugar Glider. Even though there is a tiger on their homepage, I see no evidence of a tiger for sale. Maybe next week?
